About Us

The Lambda Tau chapter of the Eta Kappa Nu was officially inducted in May 2014. Our chapter is dedicated to encourage and recognize excellence in STEM fields located at University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez and uphold the standards and credo that compose HKN’s mission and vision. Candidates and members who have demonstrated exceptional academic and professional accomplishments shall be able to grow intellectually and personally in an innovative environment by engaging in HKN technical, professional and community outreach activities.

History of Eta Kappa Nu

Maurice L. Carr, an electrical engineering student from the University of Illinois, founded HKN on October 28, 1904. The original perspective regarding qualifications for membership was that scholarship was important, but that the selection of students with the character and attitude that would make them leaders in profession was even more important. In the late 1930s, the national officers recommended that all colleges set the scholastic qualifications for membership to be the upper one–fourth of the junior EE class and the upper one–third of the senior EE class. On September 1, 2010, IEEE and Eta Kappa Nu Association merged to form IEEE–HKN.

Mission and Vision

Eta Kappa Nu is the student honor society of IEEE since 2010 and is dedicated to encouraging and recognizing excellence in the IEEE–designated fields of interest. Members consist of students, alumni, and other professionals who have demonstrated exceptional academic and professional accomplishments. Student members are selected on the basis of scholastic standing, character, and leadership. Through a variety of service programs and leadership training, members develop lifelong skills that earmark them for prominent positions in industry and academia. Members are better prepared for the post–college world and are especially valuable and attractive to employers. They are recognized as extremely capable, both technically and professionally. For more than 100 years, Eta Kappa Nu has embraced excellence. In the years ahead, HKN will continue to reinvent itself to meet the needs of its members, the institutions they serve, and our overall society.
